Recreating a Sakura Shisha Mix I Loved in Japan

I first tried this Sakura-based mix at Baobab in Kannai, Yokohama. Back home in Houston, I could not easily source the same three DOZAJ flavors, so I replaced them by function rather than by brand. Then I held the XKAH Pro at the same 258°C (496°F) setting and changed only the ratios across three tests.

It started at Baobab in Kannai, Yokohama

I discovered this Sakura mix during a visit to Baobab, a shisha cafe lounge in Kannai, Yokohama.

I liked the atmosphere, but the biggest part of the experience was the manager. He knew the flavors extremely well and taught me a lot about shisha. He was also the reason I discovered FRU+TAS Sakura, which became the key flavor in this experiment.

The mix he made used FRU+TAS Sakura + DOZAJ Jasmine + DOZAJ Kiwi + DOZAJ Ice. Sakura stayed at the center, while jasmine added floral character, kiwi added a bright fruit note, and the ice gave it a cooling finish. It was exactly the kind of balance I wanted to try again.

I also got to try a little of the shop's own Baobab Mix, and that was excellent too. The visit reminded me how much a shisha mix depends not only on individual flavors, but on how they are combined and balanced.

Back in Houston, I could not source the exact same ingredients

I brought FRU+TAS Sakura back from Japan, so that part was easy. The problem was the three DOZAJ flavors: Jasmine, Kiwi, and Ice were not nearly as easy for me to source in the US.

Instead of chasing exact brand matches, I decided to preserve the role of each flavor.

The structure stayed the same: Sakura + Jasmine + Kiwi + Cooling. The brands did not.

The four flavors used for my Houston version. FRU+TAS Sakura stayed the same, while Jasmine, Kiwi and Cooling were replaced with brands I could source.

The four flavors I used

FRU+TAS Sakura

This was the only flavor carried over directly from the original mix. FRU+TAS describes it as a Sakura profile with floral cherry, tart rose, and a subtle almond-like note.[1]

Because this was the flavor I wanted at the center of the mix, I kept the original rather than replacing it.

Afzal Jasmine

I used Afzal Jasmine in place of DOZAJ Jasmine. Its job was to add floral character behind the Sakura. In the first test I used too much, and correcting that became one of the key changes in the experiment.

Afzal Kiwi

Afzal Kiwi replaced DOZAJ Kiwi and supplied the bright fruit note. I started with it at 50%, which was too dominant, but I still kept 30% in the final mix because that freshness worked well with Sakura.

Social Smoke Absolute Zero

For cooling, I also had Trifecta Twice the Ice X on hand, but its mint character felt too strong for the more delicate Sakura profile.

I chose Social Smoke Absolute Zero instead. It is not a flavorless cooling additive; it still brings a mint character, but in this mix I found it easier to integrate with the Sakura and kiwi. The product description characterizes Absolute Zero as an icy blend of mixed mints.[2]

Why I used an XKAH Pro for the comparison

I made all three versions with an XKAH Pro, an electronically controlled heater rather than charcoal.

That matters when the goal is to compare ratios. With charcoal, heat changes with the number and position of coals, how far they have burned, and how much ash has built up. Even if the mix changes, the heat conditions may change too.

The XKAH Pro uses electronic heating and offers temperature adjustment in Custom Mode. XKAH also highlights its Precision Temperature Control system.[3]

For these tests I kept the XKAH Pro at the same 258°C (496°F) setting and changed only the mix. Electronic heating does not make every physical condition perfectly constant, but it removes charcoal combustion as a major variable and makes the comparison easier to control.

Test 1 | 2 : 2 : 5 : 1

I started with Sakura : Jasmine : Kiwi : Absolute Zero = 2 : 2 : 5 : 1.

Normalized to 10 g, that is 2 g Sakura, 2 g Jasmine, 5 g Kiwi, and 1 g Absolute Zero: 20% / 20% / 50% / 10%. My actual first test read 10.5 g on the scale, so the gram values here are a 10 g normalization of the ratio rather than a claim that the photographed batch landed exactly at 10.0 g.

The XKAH Pro remained at 258°C (496°F). From this point on, I changed only the ratios.

2251 | Good, but Sakura was not the main flavor

The first surprise was that the mix was actually good. It just was not the Sakura mix I wanted.

  • Kiwi came through clearly.
  • Jasmine was too prominent.
  • Sakura was weak.
  • The cooling worked, but I wanted a little more.

The biggest problem was simple: the Sakura mix did not taste Sakura-led.

That gave me a clear direction: Sakura up / Jasmine down / Kiwi down / Cooling up.

Test 2 | 3 : 1 : 4.5 : 1.5

The next ratio was Sakura : Jasmine : Kiwi : Absolute Zero = 3 : 1 : 4.5 : 1.5.

Normalized to 10 g: 3 g Sakura, 1 g Jasmine, 4.5 g Kiwi, and 1.5 g Absolute Zero.

2251Test 2
Sakura20%30%
Jasmine20%10%
Kiwi50%45%
Cooling10%15%

Test 2 was much better, but still needed more Sakura

This was a clear improvement. Cutting Jasmine to 10% stopped it from dominating, and increasing Absolute Zero to 15% gave the mix noticeably stronger cooling. Overall balance was much better than 2251.

The direction was right, but one issue remained: I still wanted more Sakura.

At 30%, Sakura was easier to notice than before, but it still did not feel like the center of the mix I remembered. That told me that reducing Jasmine alone was not enough; Sakura itself needed to move higher. Kiwi still belonged in the mix, but it did not need to stay near half of the total.

Final | 4 : 1 : 3 : 2

The final ratio was Sakura : Jasmine : Kiwi : Absolute Zero = 4 : 1 : 3 : 2.

The final mix was weighed to exactly 10.0 g: 4 g FRU+TAS Sakura, 1 g Afzal Jasmine, 3 g Afzal Kiwi, and 2 g Social Smoke Absolute Zero.

The XKAH setting was still 258°C (496°F). Only the mix changed.

This was the first version where Sakura clearly sat at the center. Jasmine moved into the background, kiwi kept the mix bright without taking over, and the cooling was strong enough to give the whole mix a clean finish.

For me, 4132 became the finished version.

Why 4132 worked for me

The final mix is 40% Sakura, 10% Jasmine, 30% Kiwi, and 20% Absolute Zero.

Sakura 40% | The lead

It moved from 20% to 30% to 40%. Even 30% still felt a little light, while 40% finally put Sakura at the center.

Jasmine 10% | Floral support

At 20% it competed with Sakura. At 10% it became a background floral note instead.

Kiwi 30% | Brightness

It moved from 50% to 45% to 30%. The flavor still adds freshness, but it no longer competes for the lead.

Absolute Zero 20% | Cooling

It moved from 10% to 15% to 20%. I increased it gradually until the cooling felt strong enough to sharpen the Sakura and kiwi without becoming the main flavor.

Not an exact copy—my Houston version

My original goal was simply to have the Sakura mix I liked in Japan again. The problem was that I could not source the exact same ingredients.

So I preserved the flavor roles, replaced the brands, tested 2251, adjusted to 3 : 1 : 4.5 : 1.5, found that the balance improved but Sakura was still lacking, and finally moved to 4132.

This is not an exact copy of the mix I had at Baobab, and it does not use the same DOZAJ flavors. But it does capture what I wanted from the original idea using ingredients I could work with in Houston.

That process—replacing what I could not source, trying it, comparing the result, and adjusting again—ended up being more interesting than simply copying a recipe.

Conclusion

I started with a Sakura mix I loved in Yokohama, replaced the ingredients I could not easily source in the US, and tested three ratios under the same XKAH Pro setting.

2251 was good but too jasmine- and kiwi-forward. The second ratio fixed much of the balance and strengthened the cooling, but Sakura still felt too light. Raising Sakura to 40% and reducing kiwi to 30% produced the 4132 mix that finally felt right to me.

The final recipe is easy to remember, but the useful part was the path to it: taste, identify what is off, change one design variable, and try again.
