Costco Executive vs. Gold Star: I Found Out I Was Executive and Tried the 9 a.m. Shopping Hour

I checked my account and discovered I already had an Executive membership. So I tried the dedicated shopping hours, then compared the fees, rewards, and break-even point using Costco’s current official information.

Before writing about Executive Member shopping hours, I checked my own membership status and found out that I was already an Executive Member. So I went during the 9 a.m. hour. The warehouse felt noticeably different: fewer people, less cart traffic, and much easier movement through the aisles.

2% Reward break-even point—About $3,250/year in qualified purchases

Gold Star costs $65 per year and Executive costs $130. Executive adds the annual 2% Reward, dedicated shopping hours, a monthly credit on an eligible Same-Day or Instacart order, and selected service benefits.[1]

Executive-only morning shopping

Current Executive shopping hours are 9–10 a.m. Monday through Friday, 9–9:30 a.m. Saturday, and 9–10 a.m. Sunday.[1]

Crowds vary by store and day, but my visit was clearly easier than a typical Costco trip. This benefit is hard to price in dollars, yet avoiding crowds can be genuinely useful if you shop often.

How much do you need to spend to break even?

The Executive upgrade adds $65 per year. Gold Star does not include a membership Reward, so the relevant difference is Executive’s additional 2%.

$65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250 per year

That is about $271 per month in qualified purchases.

The key word is qualified. Costco excludes purchases such as gasoline, Food Court items, membership fees, and Costco Shop Cards. Alcohol is also excluded in Texas.[2]

Doesn’t Gold Star also earn 2%?

Gold Star itself does not include a membership Reward. The common source of confusion is the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi, which has a separate credit-card reward. A Gold Star member may earn that card’s 2% at Costco and Costco.com under the card terms.

An Executive Member using the same card may receive both the card reward and the separate Executive 2% Reward on qualifying purchases. For the membership-only comparison here, it is Gold Star 0% versus Executive 2%.[3]

The monthly $10 Same-Day / Instacart credit

Executive Members can receive a $10 monthly credit on one eligible Costco Same-Day or Costco Instacart order of at least $150 before tax. It expires at the end of each month and does not roll over. Alcohol and prescription items do not count toward the $150 threshold.[4]

That can matter for regular delivery customers. Since I normally shop in the warehouse, I see it as a useful extra rather than the main reason to upgrade.

For me, the quieter store may matter more than 2%

Executive Membership discussions usually focus on the spending calculation. That matters, but crowded Costco trips can also take time and energy. If the 9 a.m. window lets me finish a normal trip faster, that has real value too.

And I had access to the benefit without realizing it. The first step may simply be checking which membership you already have.

Side note: Houston is still hot...

Halloween merchandise made sense. The snowman directly behind it was another story. Outside, Houston was still around 95°F (35°C), while fall and winter were already sharing the same Costco aisle.

Bottom line: spending plus actual use

Based on the Reward alone, about $3,250 per year—or $271 per month—in qualified purchases is the break-even point. But dedicated morning hours and the monthly delivery credit can change the practical value.

The better question is not only “How much do I spend?” but also “Will I actually use the Executive-only benefits?”

Research. Try. Fail. Learn. Enjoy.
